Thailand might seem an obvious choice for a honeymoon. But beyond the resort-based packages lies a wealth of opportunities for a little adventure. 

The hustle and bustle of Bangkok is a mini adventure in itself, especially when seen from the back of a tuk-tuk weaving through the busy streets of the old town. 

Then there's the opportunity to spend a night or two on a floating river raft backed by jungle. Explore the waterways by boat during the day and head out on night safaris once darkness descends. 

Further south you're spoilt for choice when it comes to paradise islands. But there's so much more to do here than sunbathing and relaxing by the pool. Venture into Khao Sok National Park to marvel at the towering karst islands, hike through the jungle to spectacular viewpoints, and snorkel to see what lies below the surface.

Honeymoon destination No.2 - The Philippines

Staying in Asia, the island nation of the Philippines is another top choice for couples who like the feel of sand between their toes. And sure, you could come here and spend two weeks in a resort staring at the same beach the whole time. 

Or you could get a little Robinson Crusoe and head out on a rustic island expedition to spend a few nights in untouched paradise. Imagine an island with nothing but sand, palm trees and the peaceful sound of the lapping waves. No resorts, no hordes of tourists. Just you, your beau and a handful of other travellers looking for an off-grid experience.

Honeymoon destination No.4 - Tanzania

Honeymoon destination No.5 - Costa Rica

Africa's not the only region that offers a wealth of wildlife encounters - Costa Rica in Central America can easily compete with the best of Africa's national parks. For starters, it's one of the most biodiverse regions in the world. Here you'll find protected reserves home to all manner of species, from sloth to howler monkey, tapir to ocelot, turtle to crocodile, macaw to toucan. 

And it's not hard to get off the well trodden path by swapping the popular Manual Antonio National Park with the harder to reach Corcovado National Park on the southwestern Pacific coast. The park is only accessible by boat or plane and approaching this wilderness is like entering Jurassic Park!

In the interior of the country you'll find adventures of a different kind with white water rafting and volcano treks, topped off with a romantic dip in the local hot springs of Arenal. 

Sandwiched between the Pacific and Caribbean coasts, Costa Rica is certainly not short on beaches, so it's another destination offering an alluring combo of adventure and a little tropical R&R.

Honeymoon destination No.6 - Indonesia

Did you know that Indonesia is home to over 17,000 islands? Yes, you read that correctly - 17,000! So if you're looking for a slice of island paradise on your honeymoon, you are truly spoilt for choice in Indonesia. 

However, despite this overwhelming choice, most honeymooners head straight to the popular island of Bali. And for good reason. Bali is renowned for its stunning beaches, lush landscapes and rich spiritual heritage. Here you can hike among painfully photographic rice terraces, purify your soul at a Hindu temple and enjoy a sundowner watching a vivid sunset - all in one day!

But why stop here? A short ferry ride away lies the neighbouring island of Lombok - offering a less crowded and more laidback experience. 

A little further still and you'll find the Gili islands - a trio of tiny islands just off the coast of Lombok in the northwest. The smallest of the three is Gili Air. It's so small you can walk around it in under three hours! And it's a vehicle-free island, so there really is no better place to enjoy a few days of peace in paradise.

Honeymoon destination No.7 - South Africa

If you're looking for a honeymoon destination that combines culture and cuisine with impressive landscapes and wildlife encounters, look no further than South Africa. 

Start in the undeniably attractive city of Cape Town where you can dine at modern restaurants, hike to Table Mountain, observe penguin colonies and swot up on local history at Robben Island.

From there you can venture out to Franschhoek with its centuries-old vineyards and Cape Dutch architecture. Indulge in world-class South African wine and delectable meals to accompany your drinks.  

Of course, while in South Africa there's the chance to visit the famous Kruger National Park, the largest and oldest of its kind in the country. More impressively, it's home to 336 tree species, 49 fish, 34 amphibians, 114 reptiles, 507 birds, and 147 mammals, including a high density of lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and buffalos. 

From Kruger National Park, it's under a 2hr flight to Victoria Falls - one of the world's largest waterfalls situated on the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia. It would be a crime to pass over the opportunity to take a leisurely sunset cruise and walk the walkways to admire the spectacular views. 

For those looking for a splash of adrenaline with their honeymoon, Vic Falls delivers with white water rafting, bungee jumping, a gorge swing and ziplining. If you're feeling flush and really looking to treat yourselves, head to the skies on a helicopter ride to appreciate the views of Vic Falls from above.

Honeymoon destination No.8 - Argentina

Another honeymoon destination that delivers on amazing cuisine and jaw-dropping landscapes is Argentina. But here you can add to the mix a passionate culture (think the sensual dance of Tango and the deep-rooted love of football) and a capital city that is awash with elegant architecture and personality. 

And that's where any good honeymoon adventure should start - in the steamy city of Buenos Aires. Walk the historic streets and colourful neighbourhoods by day, head into the dark spaces of an intimate theatre to watch a captivating Tango performance by night. 

Then consider swapping the city sights for nature on a grand scale at Iguazu Falls. Split across Argentina and Brazil, it's the largest waterfall system in the world and you'll need a couple of days to do it justice. Marvel at the staircase cascades from both sides of the river and prepare to get wet!

No honeymoon trip to Argentina would be complete without a few leisurely days spent exploring the vineyards of Mendoza. Here you can sample international hits including Malbec and Torrontés while soaking up the views of snow-capped mountains in the distance. 

Argentina is a big place, which does make getting from north to south expensive. But if you've got the budget, head to the northern fringes of Patagonia to spend a few days in the town of El Calafate. From here you can visit the spectacular Perito Moreno Glacier and spend a night on a traditional ranch for a taste of the gaucho life. 

It's the perfect introduction to all that Argentina has to offer.

Honeymoon destination No.9 - Sri Lanka

If you want a little bit of everything good on your honeymoon, Sri Lanka is a top choice. It's home to diverse landscapes, cultural richness, delicious cuisine and it's relatively affordable. Plus, it's an island nation, which means you're spoilt for choice when it comes to idyllic beaches. 

Did you know that Sri Lanka is also a prime safari destination? It's home to a number of national parks with surprisingly large populations of Asian elephants and leopards. While on a safari drive you might also catch sight of macaques, sloth bear, sambar deer and loris, to name a few. 

You can cover a lot of ground in a relatively short amount of time, mixing the historic sites of Sigiriya Rock Fortress and Dambulla Cave Temple with wildlife encounters in Minneriya and Yala national parks. 

To appease the 'gram, include a few days in the scenic town of Ella. You can ride the famous train, enjoying the gorgeous views along the way, and visit picturesque sites including Adam's Peak, the 9 Arch Bridge, the Ella Gap and Ravana Waterfalls. 

Top this all off with however many days as you like at a coastal resort on the southwest coast. While away the days on a golden-sand beach backed by palm trees - the perfect end to a honeymoon adventure.
