Eswatini Build A Future Volunteer Project

Volunteer Role

As a volunteer, on the build a future program you will be in the communities, building classrooms and structures for the children and maintaining existing infrastructures, with the aim of giving a good shelter for these children and a suitable schooling environment. You may also assist with the development
and maintenance of gardens which provide a source of nutritious food to the children.

You will use local techniques of making mud bricks, then lay foundations, complete plastering, flooring, windows, doors, and roofing under the supervision and direction of a local builder. Then decorate the structure! You will have the opportunity to meet with local community members and provide support to needy families and children while working on the building.

Some of the activities you will get involved in include:
- Making clay bricks
- Clearing and preparing land for structures to be built
- Digging of foundations upon which to build
- Fencing & developing gardens to provide nutritious food for the children
- Painting structures
- Upkeep swings and other play equipment

*Please note that the activities listed above are based on availability and may vary by season. These are samples of activities that volunteers are likely to participate in.

What Makes a Good Volunteer?

Volunteers need to be flexible and keep an open mind concerning their placements as situations can arise beyond our control which could require you to be placed at a different project than the one you have initially chosen. We will of course always do our utmost to fulfill your initial wishes but do remember that where you are going is quite different from where you are coming and as such one should be prepared for things not always going according to plan.

Volunteering and intercultural travel share a common trait: the more you put into it, the more you get out of it. This program is designed for proactive individuals and groups that are prepared to adapt to the local environment and its current needs. Naturally, the scheduling and activities of our program are subject to change. Alterations in activities are mainly due to changes in local conditions, which we believe is part of what makes overseas programs the interesting adventure and incredible learning experience that they are.

How Long Should I Volunteer?

Our projects range from 1 week up to approx. 30 weeks. Projects have a specified minimum stay, then it’s up to you how long you can commit. In our experience the longer you stay the more you will gain, as your understanding of the project broadens and you take on more responsibilities. Every volunteer will be given a certificate of appreciation at the end of their stay as a symbol of volunteering stay.
Summary

What’s included?

Accommodation

During your stay, you will be accommodated in an award-winning Lidwala Lodge in Ezulwini Valley. Lidwala Lodge provides comfortable accommodation with a friendly vibe in a gorgeous convenient setting with a spectacular view across the valley. You will be accommodated in a dorm room with 4-6 single gender bunk beds with communal bathroom facilities. Bed, mattress, sheet and pillows will be provided, but note if you plan to go on tours on home stays during your time in Eswatini then a sleeping bag may be required. Lidwala Lodge is surrounded by a beautiful garden, with an outdoor sitting area, TV, and a communal kitchenette to prepare snacks & coffee. Often you can see monkeys roaming around the garden and the many plants attract a wide range of birds. Your rooms are located just steps away from the All Out Africa office and a communal swiming pool (perfect for a dip after projects!).

Local transport

Return transfer is included. At OR Tambo Airport, you will be met by All Out Africa staff members who will transfer you by road from Johannesburg to the Kingdom of Eswatini. Please ensure your flight arrives BEFORE 12:00. The bus leaves for Eswatini once all participants have arrived or at 13:00 at the latest. The departure transfer bus will depart from Lidwala Lodge 07:30, and the transfer takes approximately 4.5 hours to reach Johannesburg airport. We suggest booking a late afternoon flight departing AFTER 16:00 in case of unforeseen traffic delays.

Meals

You will receive 3 meals a day when joining an All Out Africa experience. These meals are eaten together on the communal outdoor area. Breakfast is self-service from a selection of items including cereals, fruit, yogurt, bread and spreads. Lunch might sometimes be a packed lunch to take with you for the day, or usually a cooked meal at the Lodge. Dinner is a cooked meal, types of dishes served include pasta, stir-fry, braai (BBQ) and stew. You may be asked to assist with preparation or meal clean up.

Vegetarians and most food allergies can be catered for. In order to fully support you during your experience, please advise us at time of booking if you have any food allergies or preferences, so we can cater for these in our meal plans. We will do our best but be prepared your food selection may not be as varied as other participants. If your food allergies/preference are quite restrictive (for example, gluten free), we may require you to pay an additional fee to allow us to cater for you.
