Firstly, it can be difficult to plan a big tour in Africa, as the infrastructure is usually quite poor. Secondly, there are many things to be aware of when crossing national borders and dealing with government officials. On a group tour, there will always be local guides who know exactly where you can stop, where you should shop, where it is safe to exchange money, and where there is the greatest chance of spotting wild animals.
And then, of course, there is the most important element: it's more social. There's really nothing quite like a cosy evening around the campfire at a campsite in the middle of nowhere in Africa, where you can enjoy a cold beer in the company of other adventurers from all over the world.
