FAQs:

What is a medical elective?

A placement that medical or healthcare students undertake to gain real-word experience. For medicine students, they are typically taken in the penultimate or final year of study and usually last 4-12 weeks.

Why should I complete my medical elective abroad?

Medical conditions and treatments vary greatly from country to country. By taking your medical elective abroad, you will gain a greater understanding of diverse illnesses, techniques and social issues that impact healthcare around the world.

Am I eligible?

You will need to be 18+ years old , possess a basic competency in English and have an established medical background or interest. For example, you are currently studying or are due to study medicine, nursing, pharmacy, occupational/physical therapy and/or have practical work experience.

What do I need to apply?

As a minimum, you will need a police clearance certificate, a valid passport and a copy of your CV. You may also need supporting proof of your education and a visa, dependent on your chosen destination and program length. We recommend reaching out to our team for more information.

What will I be doing?

Dependent on the program you could cover anything from learning treatment techniques, immunisation, clinical care and patient outreach, while observing and assisting medical professionals. We recommend reaching out to our team for more information.

How long should I volunteer for?

Programs range from 1-8 weeks. While some projects may have a specified minimum stay, it is up to you how long you commit. In our experience, the longer you stay, then more you will gain!

How much does it cost and what does it include?

Costs vary greatly dependent on program but can be as low as £47 per day for your medical program, accommodation, activities and an airport transfer. For more detailed costs and inclusions, please get in contact with our team.

What Other Students Thought:

"Honestly, it was a really memorable and valuable placement for me overall.

I genuinely had a great time in Zanzibar. The placement gave me a really unique insight into healthcare in a completely different setting and allowed me to experience both the clinical and cultural side of medicine in a way that would be difficult to get elsewhere. I spent time in the ophthalmology clinic, where I was able to observe consultations, learn basic examination techniques, and see conditions and presentations that were very different from what I’ve encountered in the UK so far.

Overall, I found the programme well organised. The team were welcoming and supportive from the beginning, and the orientation week helped ease everyone into the environment. The local coordinators were approachable and always willing to help with transport, questions, or arranging placements.

The accommodation was much better than I expected and had a really social atmosphere, which made it easy to meet people from different countries and backgrounds. The food was also good overall, especially considering the setting, and there were plenty of local places nearby to explore as well.

What probably stood out to me most was the experience outside of the hospital too. Living in Zanzibar for a couple of weeks, experiencing the culture, meeting local people, and seeing the realities of healthcare in a lower-resource setting gave me a much broader perspective both personally and medically.

I’d definitely recommend it to students who are open-minded, adaptable, and interested in global health or experiencing medicine in a very different environment to the UK."
