The STASI prison, Hohenschönhausen was not only top-secured, it was also top secret – In fact, it was said that the STASI prison was one of the biggest secrets of DDR. The prison area would not be marked on a map of East Berlin and therefore only STASI people knew the location of the prison. Even though the wall has fallen long ago and the DDR time is over, it is as if a little bit of the feared East German intelligent service lives on in Hohenschönhausen. Today, the prison is preserved almost in its original state and you can see everything, from the water torture cells, established in the 1950s, to the more modern ‘traffic light system’ intended to keep the prisoners completely isolated from each other, and much more. It is a very moving experience to visit the prison where you will be guided by a local guide and hear them tell about isolation, interrogations, inhumanity and everyday life in the prison. Today, we know the address: Genslerstrasse 66
The price is per student group (max 18 years) for local English or German speaking guide.
