Mauthausen was the largest concentration camp of World War II in Austria. During the years of war, about 200,000 people from all over the world were imprisoned here, far more than half of them did not survive. The prisoners died of exhaustion because of the forced hard labour or from diseases as a result of the catastrophic hygienic conditions. Others were tortured to death, shot or gassed in gas chambers. A visit to Mauthausen can be combined with a tour to Linz.
