Dublin Castle is situated in the very heart of historic Dublin and was built in the years 1208 - 1220. The castle was restored in the 17th, 18th, and 20th centuries. Today, Dublin Castle is only used for state visits but has previously functioned as fort, prison, safe custody of treasure, and courthouse. For more than 700 years, the English used Dublin Castle as the seat of administration for all Ireland, and it has been the centre of the history of the city. The tour will take you through the State Apartments, including the old throne, and underground to see the “origin” of the city, where the rivers Liffey and Poddle met, and created ”the black pool” – Dubh Linn – hence the name Dublin. The tour is very informative on England/Ireland, after the revolution, and is led by entertaining guides. As the tour is extremely popular, we recommend a very early booking, as there are limitations to the number of visiting groups.
A booking fee will be charged.
